Why Stability Testing and Quality Control Matter in Herbal Products
Natural products vary. Quality control and stability testing are how brands keep every batch consistent and set a sensible shelf life.
Herbal and Ayurvedic products are made from natural materials, and natural materials vary with species, season, region, harvesting and storage. That variation is exactly why quality control (QC) and stability testing matter. They help ensure that the product a customer buys in month ten is as expected as the one made on day one.
What is quality control?
Quality control is the set of checks that confirm materials and products meet agreed specifications. It covers incoming raw materials, work in progress and finished goods. A specification is a written list of tests and acceptable limits.
Raw material checks
Typical checks for herbs and extracts include correct identification, appearance, moisture, foreign matter and, where relevant, microbial limits, heavy metals and pesticide residues. Reliable suppliers provide a certificate of analysis, and good manufacturers verify important parameters themselves.
In-process and finished product checks
During production, operators check weights, mixing, temperature, fill volumes or tablet characteristics as relevant. Finished batches are tested against the specification before release. Depending on the product, tests can include description, disintegration, pH, viscosity, microbial limits and assay of marker compounds.
What is stability testing?
Stability testing studies how a product changes over time under defined storage conditions, such as temperature and humidity. It looks at physical changes such as colour, odour, separation or caking, chemical changes in marker compounds, and microbial safety. Results help to decide shelf life and recommended storage.
Why it matters for herbal products
- Shelf life. Without data, an expiry date is a guess. Data supports a defensible date.
- Packaging selection. Testing in the intended pack shows whether it protects against moisture, light and air.
- Consistency. Tracking marker compounds helps ensure batches are comparable.
- Customer trust. Products that change in colour, smell or texture quickly damage a brand.
- Fewer returns. Spotting problems early reduces complaints and recalls.
Common risks in herbal products
Moisture can cause clumping or microbial growth in powders and capsules. Water-based products need effective preservation systems. Oils may oxidise. Light-sensitive ingredients can degrade in clear containers. Each risk has practical controls, but only if it is identified through testing.
Documentation and traceability
Good quality systems keep batch records that show which raw materials went into each batch, who processed it, what tests were done and when it was released. Retention samples allow a batch to be re-examined later. For brand owners, this traceability is valuable if a question ever arises.
What brands should ask for
- A list of tests done on raw materials and finished batches.
- Whether QC is done in-house or at an approved external laboratory.
- Whether stability studies are available or can be arranged for your product.
- How out-of-specification results are handled.
- What documents accompany each batch.
Planning for stability studies
Stability studies take time, so plan them early in product development rather than just before launch. Some brands launch with a conservative shelf life and extend it as real-time data comes in. Agree the plan with your manufacturer and any external laboratory.
Seasonal and supply variation
Because herbs differ from season to season and from supplier to supplier, brands often set approved supplier lists and clear acceptance limits. This reduces surprises when a raw material lot changes. Periodic requalification of suppliers is a sign of a mature quality system.
Frequently asked questions
Is stability testing mandatory? Requirements depend on the product category. Even where not strictly required, it is good practice. Verify current rules.
Who pays for testing? This is decided in your agreement. Clarify it before you start.
How is shelf life decided? From stability data under defined conditions, along with regulatory guidance.
